Night Life:

Finke Theatre was said to be the “Neatest little opera house in Central Missouri” according to William Finke in 1897 and is, once again, providing a fun night life to Old Town California, Missouri.  The Historic Finke Theatre has gone through extensive renovations to bring back the glory it once held after its initial 1937 renovation into the Art Deco era.  As stated on the Finke Theatre website, “To stay true to the era and history of the theatre, efforts were made to reclaim as much of the buildings’ original hardware and fixtures as possible. Now the beautiful Finke Theatre has refinished original floors, reclaimed and re-upholstered seats with original aisle floor lighting, extraordinary painted wall detail with original art deco sconces, an expanded stage wired for sound and light, the lobby features a wood and textured glass ticket booth. The first floor of the adjacent Finke Building boasts a spacious concessions area featuring a rotating exhibit of local artwork and comfortable handicap accessible restrooms.” (http://www.finketheater.com/about.html) Experience the Finke Theatre by grabbing a ticket to one of the great shows hosted throughout the year or consider renting it as a great venue for various social occasions, receptions, and weddings. 315 N High St (next to Patricia Kay Interiors) 573-691-9939

While you are shopping Old Town California, plan to take a sight-seeing stroll to embrace the sights this little historic area has to offer. The oldest area is on the square centered around the Historic Moniteau County Courthouse, containing a variety of businesses.  The courthouse itself is definitely worth a walk through if you are in town during the week.

Main Street offers a stroll past another row of historic brick buildings including the Finke Theatre (as discussed above) and the Moniteau County Cultural Heritage Center (the original post office building). As you turn up South Street, you will see the building (now in need of some major love and care) that once housed California’s very own hospital and private residence for the doctor who ran it.

The next sight is one of the greatest sights Old Town California has to offer; the Victorian era Eitzen Mansion built in 1898 by Charles A. Eitzen. The Eitzen Mansion has had many titles and uses over the last 100+ years, now presently a private residence after extensive renovations by the current owners Richard and Pam Green, great and very active patrons towards the revitalization of Old Town.

Turning left up Oak Street will move toward what used to be known as “Uptown California.” Rows of historic buildings and homes line the street on either side, filled with private residences and a happy selection of businesses (including Winding Road Gifts & Interiors) and the Moniteau County Library. While there are some storefronts standing vacant, we like to think of them as full of possibilities rather than empty.  If you have a creative side, consider the many possibilities one of our affordable storefronts can offer your business in an area full of new life.
